This rare and beautiful poster was made by the Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad
The poster was made to encourage people to see play “The Lady of the Camellias” in Denmark, an adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel from 1848 by the Danish playwright Kjeld Abell.
The novel which is based on real events and the author's memories of the Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis is a love story and the story is told by Duval himself to the (unnamed) narrator of the novel.
Duplessis is named as the Lady of the camellias (I believe that this poster displays her) who suffers from tuberculosis because she wears a white camellia when she is available to her lover(s) and a red one when her delicate condition precludes making love.
This is one of Wiinblad's first posters ever made and if you are familiar with his art you can see some parallels to his later and more well known crafts.
The craft of Wiinblad is often colorful, lush and full of humor. He was inspired by the sumptuous oriental style far from the Nordic stylish line. This artwork is differently true to his special line - this horse rider looks like his is wearing some kind of Oriental clothing with a twist of imagination.
The views on his works are to this day very divided, but interest in his finer things are unrelenting - especially abroad (particularly the U.S., Japan, Germany and Norway). Bjørn Wiinblad's contemporaries were not exactly inclined to acknowledge his way to work, so his position as an artist has been a bit special.
Globally, Bjørn Wiinblad is one of the very best selling Danish artists. He is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
