Behold! A poster I always wanted in the shop is now available. This beauty here is not only very rare and made by one the greatest poster artist in Denmark, the poster here is also iconic and is still reproduced to a sad and unrecognizable level.

This one here is the original and the condition could be better which is also reflected in the price.

The poster was created during the German occupation of Denmark (1940-45) and I believe that the poster could reflect that time period. In most other Tivoli posters there is a lot of people, magic and joyfulness - it is an amusement park after all. But this lonesome and empty gondola seems to glide into darkness. This could be a metaphor of the dark years Denmark suffered during the time when the poster was made.

On the other hand this is also a truly magical and mysterious poster which encapsulates the gondola climbing to the heavens. Even though the motif is simple this poster is able to wake up your imagination and create an atmosphere of its own.

With all that said, this is also an advertisement for Tivoli Gardens located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Every year Tivoli Gardens (or simply Tivoli) lets a Danish artist design the poster art for the coming season.

Tivoli Gardens is one of the world most famous amusement parks. The Gardens is the second oldest amusement park in the world and is (for many good reasons) the most visited spot in Scandinavia.

The artwork for this poster was created by the Danish cartoonist, graphical artist and architect Ib Andersen (1907 - 1969). Andersen is probably best known for making this poster along with a poster for DDL (The Danish Aviation Company). In the 1930s he was part of the juicy and powerful expression, where enthusiasm for the new currents grip on himself and how his own work reached absolute heights in both color palette and bold compositions. Nobody else in Denmark could draw the special Danish summer night sky, the yellow-green color, fade to light blue and color of the ivory black, with a dark wood in silhouette from the villa road gardens, sporadically lit by the road's street lights. Andersen is differently one of the greatest and influential graphical artist (and there are many) that Denmark ever mustered.

This is truly a must-have for the serious poster enthusiast or someone who like high class vintage posters.
