This beautiful art deco advertisement poster from The East Asiatic Company portraying four passengers ships sailing in a perfect diagonal from different directions.

The white ship in the top is most legendary ship from the fleet, Jutlandia. Jutlandia was built as a state-of-the-art ship in 1934 in Denmark and sailed en route between Copenhagen and Bangkok. During the Nazi invasion of Denmark in 1940 she narrowly escaped being bombed by both axis and allied forces though she was a not a military target.

When the Korean War broke out in 1950, Denmark's committed to assist the United Nations and to provide humanitarian aid to the Allied forces in South Korea. The decision was not straightforward: the atmosphere between the cold war superpowers was tense, and Denmark had to find a way to support the UN in without appearing aggressive. There was very quickly made pharmaceuticals available and after negotiations it was agreed that Denmark also sent a hospital ship. In the fall of 1950 EAC accepted to make Jutlandia available to the Danish government while she was en route to New York. With three different flags in the mast (Dannebrog, the Red Cross and the UN flag), Jutlandia had a capacity of 350 patients at the same time. In all she made in back and forth to Korea three times during the war before she served as a royal yacht for the king of Thailand and his entourage during the official visit in Scandinavia. After that Jutlandia continued to sail between Copenhagen and Bangkok before she finally ended her days in 1965.

The East Asiatic Company Ltd. traces its origins back to 1884 when the founder of the Company, Captain H.N. Andersen, started a trading and shipping business between Thailand and Denmark. The Company was formally registered in Denmark in 1897 and from this date on it has pursued a worldwide business within trading, shipping and industry.
